Definition - Bible
Faith is trusting what you know to be true even when all appearances are to the contrary.
To fully understand that definition, we need the definition of trust. The dictionary defines trust as a firm belief in the reliability, truth, ability, or strength of someone or something
Faith requires an object, a someone or something to be trusted.
God is the only reliable object of our faith, the only one worthy of our complete trust.
"For truly, I say to you, if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you’”. Matthew 17:20 (NIV) |
Jesus described the power of faith using the illustration of the mustard seed. Because we imagine that it takes great faith to do small things we miss out on what God can do in and through us for His glory. If we step out with our mustard seed sized faith, we will see what our God can do. as a result, our faith will grow.
"So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ". Romans 10:17 (NIV) |
We have the Bible as God's word to us, and the Holy Spirit to help us understand it.
"And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love". 1 Corinthians 13:13 (NIV) |
Everything in our world is temporal (subject to time) and will eventually cease to exist. Paul tells us that three things will remain (continue to exist): faith, hope and love because each of them is is founded on God who is eternal.
"For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith - and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God - not by works, so that no one can boast". Ephesians 2:8-9 (NIV) |
Paul explains that we are saved by grace but faith is our part in the process. Jesus' sacrifice, an act of grace is available to every person. However, only those with the faith to accept gift will be saved.
